Expert Answers about Coachmen Trailer Brakes

  • Determining How To Wire Separate Brake Lights On Trailer 7-Way From Turn Signals
  • Sorry Justin I am a little confused by what you are asking. To start it sounds like your trailer has separate turn signal from brake lights which are likely going to require you to use a 2-Wire to 3-Wire Converter # C56196 to separate the turn signals from the brake lights at the back of your trailer. As far as operating your electric brakes that will require a Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 on your tow vehicle. The trailer brakes are separate from the brake lights on trailers since the...

  • Will Curt Echo Work Without Brake Output Wire on Vehicle 7-Way
  • Yes, the Curt Echo # C51180 will work even though you don't have the blue brake output wire on your vehicle. That wire is used to send the brake signal from an in cab controller back to the brakes. Since the Echo installs in-line at the 7-way it sends the signal straight through at the trailer connector back to the brakes.

  • Troubleshooting 7-Way Install Where Trailer Brakes Immediately Lock Up
  • Hey John, check the black and blue wire connections. It sounds like you may have ran the 12 volt accessory circuit to the brake output circuit which is locking up the brakes as soon as the connector is plugged in. Most likely it will be that you just need to swap the 1:00 and 5:00 pins of the wiring and you'll be good.

  • Can a Factory Trailer Brake Controller be Replaced With Aftermarket on a 2018 Silverado 1500?
  • First you are going to have to have the programming removed from you ECU for the factory trailer brake controller. As I assume you liked the clean looks of the factory controller I would recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller # RED44FR. This has a small dash mounted control knob for a clean appearance and simple operation. To connect to the factory wiring you will need the Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness # 331-TPH-010.

  • Replacement 3,500 lb Brake Kits for a 2011 Freedom Express Trailer
  • Hey Michael, thanks for reaching out! It does sound like your 2011 Freedom Express should come with 3,500 lb axles so the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes # AKEBRK-35 or the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35 will work in this case. I do recommend double checking your axle capacity by looking at the tag in the middle of your axles prior to purchasing. If you have a different weight rating on your axles please let me know. Attached are some installation videos for your reference.

It'll be located below your steering wheel behind the panel on the right. I have linked a video below and attached a picture that will help you find the brake controller plug. • Tekonsha P3 Shows 0.0 On Display When Brake Pedal Is Pressed - Is Something Wrong?
  • Hello Chris. What you are describing sounds completely normal and it sounds like your Tekonsha P# controller # 90195 is installed correctly. With the trailer connected the display should show 0.0 when the brakes are applied, and it should show the current gain setting when the manual override is applied. The P3 has an internal inertia sensor. It senses deceleration and generates an output that is based on deceleration. When the vehicle is not in motion, the controller will not sense deceleration...

  • Should The Curt Triflex Controller Flash The Output Setting When Beake Pedal Is Pressed?
  • Hey Russ, so what you are describing is completely normal for the Curt Triflex brake controller. The maximum output setting is shown on the display when a trailer is connected and the brake pedal is pressed or the manual control is actuated. If a trailer is not connected the output setting is flashed when the brake pedal is pressed or the manual control is actuated.

  • Brake Controller Not Connected to 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500
  • Hi Shane, Thanks so very much for your purchase from etrailer of the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. We appreciate your business and the issue with it not being connected could be due to how a brake controller installs on certain year Silverado's, including 2008. What you need to do is activate the brake controller and 12 volt power post connections under your hood. It's somewhat lengthy so I have added a link below to a help article which details how to do this.

  • Is There Inconsistency With Electric Brake Wiring Gauge
  • That's a good question Barry, and electric brakes like # 23-468-469 do use 16 gauge wiring for the pigtails. But we do recommend using 10 gauge to connect to the brakes simply because of how far the wiring generally has to be run on trailers. I can't speak for why manufacturers use 16 gauge on the pigtails, unfortunately, but sticking with 10 or 12 gauge to ensure less voltage drop per length.

  • Installing Brake Controller on 2020 GMC Canyon With Tow Package
  • Hi Harold, When installing a brake controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195 or Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR on your 2020 GMC Canyon with the tow package, all you need to do is connect the wiring that comes with those controllers to the wires already run under your dash. I did some searching and found that on page 211 of the Canyon owner's manual it says a four-wire harness is secured behind the left side kick panel (which is the driver's side), and here are the wires in your truck (though...

  • Troubleshooting Voltage Not Reaching the Axles
  • Thanks for all the details! Unless your trailer's 7-way connector is filthy or covered in corrosion, based on what you've described it sounds like you are experiencing a voltage drop due to the distance of the brake wire from the 7-way connector. I would check the inside of the 7-way connector just to rule it out. Make sure all of the connections are solid and there's no corrosion that could interfere with the electrical signal being sent to your brakes. Most likely since you've installed...

  • Finding the Cold Side of the Stop Light Switch for Installing a TBC
  • Hey Ronnie, so to connect your brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 to your stop light switch, you're going to need to find the wire that only gets power when the brakes are pressed. Once this wire is identified, you'd need to connect the red wire to this and then the black to the positive battery, white to the ground wire, and then blue to the trailer brake.

  • Options For Adding a Trailer Brake Controller 2015 American Coach Tradition RV Freightliner Chassis
  • There used to be a plug and play option available from Tekonsha with their 3027-P adapter which would allow you to use one of their controllers like the Prodigy P3 # 90195. Since that is no longer available from Tekonsha you could cut off the factory connector and wire in the Controller # 90195 or use a trailer mounted option like the Autowbrake # 3430001 you found.
